New Treatment For Acne Scars
PALM BEACH, Fla., Dec. 29 -- Leading Palm Beach, Florida- based dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Beer announced today he is launching a clinical study to test the efficacy of cosmetic filler Sculptra(R) to treat acne and varicella (chicken pox) scars.
According to Beer, 20 participants between the ages of 18 and 65 will have their acne and varicella (chicken pox) scars injected with the cosmetic filler on a monthly basis for a period of six months. Sculptra(TM) is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid typically used on mature patients to reverse lipoatrophy (facial fat loss) due to aging, or on malnourished patients (specifically those diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus) to restore facial fat.
"Based on its long-term correction of lipoatrophy, we feel it would be reasonable to consider treatment of other indications and determine the effects of Sculptra on acne scars," said Beer.
Dr. Beer is not new to the world of clinical studies. He has been conducting clinical trials for some of the world's largest pharmaceutical and laser companies, and is the clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of Miami. He also holds a faculty appointment in Dermatology at his alma mater, Duke University, and is the founder/director of "The Cosmetic Boot Camp" -- the country's leading training seminar for cosmetic dermatologists.
